PHOTOPAGE 232

 Early August 2003

My most interesting encounter this week was with Hummingbird moths, several of which I was able to photograph pretty closely. They were so busy on the Buddleia bush that I was able to move around them without scaring them off.

Trained naturalists may experience fewer surprise discoveries, but for those of us who are just ordinary, hum-dee-dum observers, stuff like this makes strolling the park wonderful. Of course, you can also gain such experiences in your own backyard - if you approach it with the right attitude.
